Classic PS2 Titles: Katamari Damacy

Written By: admin on December 4, 2009 No Comment

The Playstation 2 has had many classic video games released for it, but none have been as trippy or odd or undeniably Japanese as Katamari Damacy. If you have not experienced this game, you are in for one weird ride.

From the opening of the game onward, you can tell that fun is about to be had. The King of All Cosmos has knocked all of the stars from the sky after drinking too much and it is up to you, the Prince, to place them back up. But how do you go about making stars? Well, you roll around earth with a giant Katamari, a magical ball that allows things to stick to it so that it grows in size, and try to collect enough stuff to make all of the stars in the sky once again.

The gameplay is just as odd as the tale. All of the controls in the game utilize the two joysticks and nothing else. You go forward by pressing both sticks forward, while moving the sticks in opposite directions will allow you to turn. If you press down both of the sticks at the same time, the Prince will hop over the ball and you can make quick turns.

What makes the game so fun and delightful include the bright colors, the quirky and addictive music and the way that rolling over random things and people scattered around the world makes you feel. As you start your adventure, you start with a tiny ball and only have the ability to roll up things like pieces of candy and ants and mice. As you grow, you can roll up larger and heavier objects like mustang accessories, people and, eventually, entire buildings and continents. Simply rolling around the world is one of the best things about the game, although the time limits on most of the stages do not allow for the full exploration of all of them.

This game was a critical and sales success in the US and spawned multiple sequels. If you, or someone you know, owns a Playstation 2 and wants to experience fun in a whole new way, you should pick up a copy of Katamari Damacy straight away.
